Relief
June 26, 2007
A lot of people don’t realize this, but there’s a gene that greatly increases your risk of ovarian cancer. My mom had it, and her grandma had it. A few weeks ago I had blood drawn and sent off to be tested to see if I also have it.
The test was negative. I don’t.
The Good Kind of Surprise
June 22, 2007
My incredibly awesome family and my wonderful boyfriend threw me a big surprise party tonight. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow; I just wanted to say that it was a lot of fun and it involved seeing my dad in a red feather boa and star-shaped sunglasses.

Hello there.
I saved a kitten’s life last week. His name is Thor, he’s 4½ weeks old, and he’s currently living with his foster mom until I get my apartment. I’m going to go visit him today.
I had my last therapy appointment yesterday. She asked if I wanted to go back in a month and I realized it was pointless. Even at yesterday’s appointment, we didn’t have anything big to talk about. I never thought I’d be in a place in my life already where I don’t have something to talk to my therapist about, but it’s nice.
Tomorrow begins my last year as a teenager. I’m glad about that… I’m ready to be an adult – or at least feel like one most of the time. I hate feeling so young on campus. I’m the only freshman in my Intro to Philosophy class, and I try to hide that fact. It’s not that it’s intimidating or scary, but there’s a certain preconceived notion that people tend to have of freshman, and I don’t want to play into that. Anyway. Point being, tomorrow is my birthday, whoohoo.
I Quit
June 14, 2007
I know – one day. But…
Things I wish I had known before I applied:
On average, breakfast servers only make $35 in tips for an 7-8 hour shift – and that’s the busiest time of day.
A “busy” day consists of 35 tables in the entire shift.
Most tips are only 10% on a $10-20 bill. You do the math.
Asking guests if everything is okay more than once is considered harassing them.
Being a waitress also means being a hostess, cashier, busboy, cook, and room service runner.
There is so little organization that the tables aren’t even numbered and they don’t require their servers to learn the menu.
“Good service” is not being polite, friendly, and welcoming – it’s being invisible.
So, yeah. I feel kind of bad quitting after a day (okay, so I didn’t even call, I just didn’t go back), but that’s only because they’re pretty nice people there. But, oh well. It was a waste of time and definitely not worth getting up at 4:30 in the morning for.
The Radisson markets itself as an upscale hotel, but it’s all fake… Once you get behind the scenes, out of the public areas, it’s obvious that the management needs to seriously assess that situation. The kitchen is huge, but so open and empty…They don’t do enough business to keep it totally stocked (except for banquets and such, I’m guessing). The walls have huge stains on them, the wallpaper is old and faded, it seemed like everything was dirty, some of their cloth napkins have holes in them…It’s fake luxury. It’s all about appearances there. “We’ll set our tables and people will think we’re high-end, so they’ll pay $7 for a continental breakfast.” Sadly, it seems to work – although apparently not THAT well, considering how slow they are.
About Damn Time
June 12, 2007
I got a job! I’m a waitress at the Radisson. My shifts start at 6am, eek. But, they end at 2pm, which means my afternoons will be free. So yay me. Now I can start saving money again.

Bar, Bar, Bar
June 9, 2007
I hate iTunes sometimes. Not being able to add more than one song at a time to my library is really frustrating, and it’s annoying that “Maroon 5[space]” is different than simply “Maroon 5″ in their catalog. Not to mention it’s a huge memory hog. I have plenty of memory so most of the time it’s not a big deal, but sometimes I want to surf the web, use Photoshop or Lightroom, and listen to music all at the same time, and iTunes makes that impossible. I want to start using WinAmp again, but the idea of switching over ALL of my songs – that would be all 865 of them – over to another player is very intimidating. That’s probably an entire day’s project, and who has the time or patience for that?
In other news I’m listening to the new Maroon 5 album for the first time and so far it’s love, baby. I’m a big fan of Songs About Jane and I’m thinking It Won’t Be Soon Before Long is just taking everything I liked about SAJ and improving on it. Then again, I’m only on the third song. ![]()
I went to a junkyard today. If I had known I was going to be a minority there, I probably would’ve dressed less…white. That sounds terrible, doesn’t it? But really. I think if I had worn my Fox racing tank and my baggy shorts, I would’ve fit in a little better than I did in my dark jeans and green heart tee. Awkward. Oh and also, I hate Haltom City and I’m never going back.
[Just so you know - in the middle ages, "bar, bar, bar" was their form of "blah, blah, blah" and is also where the word "barbarian" comes from. Fascinating stuff, I know.]
Officially

Well, I’m a college student now. Feels…the same. Except that I have a UNT t-shirt and a green highlighter that I didn’t have before. And $700 less in the bank. But other than that, no big deal.
(I’m taking Intro to Philosophy, if anyone wants to know.)
